A retired City of Fredericksburg administrator has been appointed interim manager of the Town of Tappahannock.
The Tappahannock Town Council unanimously approved the appointment of Doug Fawcett to the role during its April 14 meeting.
“Him being familiar with the area, having worked in Fredericksburg, is a big help,” Tappahannock Mayor Roy M. Gladding told the Rappahannock Times. “He’s done a little bit of everything and has a good understanding or the arts and science of public administration.”
Gladding said Council met with consulting firm The Berkeley Group regarding the opening which was created when former Town Manager Eric Pollitt departed earlier this month to become administrator for Amelia County.
“We identified to them the attributes we are looking for in a new manager,” Gladding said. “They are putting together a proposal to seek potential candidates.”
The Mayor said he hopes Council will begin reviewing applicants by mid-June.
Fawcett brings more than 40-years of experience in local government management and administration to his role here.
“I have visited Tappahannock many times over the years and have always enjoyed those visits,” said Fawcett who attended the April 14 Council meeting. “I’m glad to now have the opportunity to meet those who live and work here and to assist the Town Council, the staff and employees to continue providing quality services and projects to the Tappahannock community.”
Fawcett retired in June 2021 following a 24-year stint in Fredericksburg. There, he served initially as Director of Public Works (nearly 20 years) and just over four years as Assistant City Manager. His duties included responsibility for public works, regional transit and parks and recreation operations, as well as management of all City capital projects.
Fawcett previously served in the City of Morgantown, West Virginia (City Manager), in the Town of Blacksburg (Assistant Town Manager) and in Caroline County (as County Administrator).
He is a graduate of West Virginia University and of the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia.
In an unrelated administrative matter, Council officially appointed Assistant Town Manager James Knighton as Zoning Administrator and Zoning Agent.
Knighton had been filling those duties on an interim basis since his arrival here in July, 2024.
